Who remembers the film Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster from way back in the dark ages of the 1970's
How I loved that film when a mother and daughter switched places for the day, yesterday felt very much like my very own Freaky Friday as I dropped dad off for his first day at the Adult Day Care Centre for people with dementia
I've been so worried about how dad would cope with it all, would he make friends, would he get upset and most importantly would he feel abandoned, but I also know a big part of dads anxiety and stress is caused by his recent lack of mobility and therefore interaction with other people on top of adjusting to his Alzheimer's diagnosis
Dad agreed to go on the understanding that I'd pick him up straight away if he didn't like it there, but I needn't have worried, from the moment we rang the doorbell dad was welcomed in by name and we were enclosed within an envelope of care, before I knew it dad was heading off inside and chatting away without even a backward glance to say goodbye
When I collected dad he was so happy and telling me all about what he'd been doing and everyone he'd met, I had my happy go lucky dad back once again for a few hours before the forgetfulness started creeping back in
Yesterday was a really good day and dad is looking forward to going again next week

Eko is recovering well from his surgery although we had a bit of a scare a few days ago when he popped a couple of stitches, his temperature was slightly raised and the wound started to look infected, so it was a quick trip back to the vets for another check up to see if he needed more antibiotics as we still have no idea how he injured himself
Thankfully it didn't cost any extra to have the extra check up and we were advised to wait and see before giving Eko any more antibiotics due to over prescribing, which I thought was a bit odd as prior to this injury it's been about fours years since he last had any antibiotics
This whole incident with Eko has left a very bad taste in my mouth over the cost's involved for his stitches, but first I should mention that Boris and Eko are registered at completely different veterinary practices, this in no way reflects on any treatment Boris has recently undergone or the practice that Boris is registered with
The reasons why they are registered at different practices is a story for another day
I've never been one to complain about vet fees because they are what they are, it's private medicine and there's no NHS for pets, that's why I pay for pet insurance go help me to cover unexpected costs
But when I recieved the final bill for Eko I was shocked, I'd thought the estimate they gave us was a bit high but that's a sign of the times here in the UK at the moment, but his final bill was nearly £600 more than the estimate we were given, as far as I can tell everything was pretty straight forward, my head really can't justify how stitching Ekos's armpit up could cost almost half the amount of what it cost for Boris to see a specialist vet for orthopaedic surgery
Thankfully we have pet insurance so it's not really an issue as we'll recieve the money back for Eko's bill minus the excess eventually, but I was hard pushed to find the money and had to dig into my emergency savings which has left me pretty skint this month
The most important thing of all is that Eko is now recovering well and will hopefully be having his stitches taken out on Wednesday, this restricted exercise lark really doesn't suit Eko as he likes to be on the go all the time

DeleteWhat joy your father enjoyed his time there! I hope it proves helpful for both of you.
ReplyDeleteIt might be time to ask, nicely and gently, why the bill came up to so much more than the estimate. Sometimes by asking, I've found out there was an error and had it corrected.
Anyway, I'm glad he's healing up.
Thank you it's really lifted dads mood this past week which has been wonderful, I think you're right about double checking the bill with them, just in case of an error xxx
