Disappointing Scan Result

My poor sweet Boris
Last Thursday we received a phone call from the orthopedic specialist vets office and we were offered a cancellation appointment for a CT scan the next day about Boris's non weight bearing lameness

It had looked like there might be a hairline fracture on Boris's recent set of x-rays, but with the amount of remodeled bone due to his arthritis it was hard to tell for sure, so a CT scan was originally booked for the end of July to get a much clearer look

After missing out on his Breakfast on Friday Boris and I set off to Lumbry Park to see the orthopedic specialist vet

My poor boy has indeed fractured his elbow at the humourous bone and needs a screw putting in to hold it together, but real the kicker is this - I can't afford to do any surgery until after 28th August when his insurance policy renews

The cost of yesterday's CT scan used up the last amount of money that was left on this year's policy for his ongoing treatment of arthritis

As much as I want Boris to have the surgery sooner I just don't have a slack £4,000(ish) kicking around to cover it, but I'm so grateful for his insurance policy and to know that as soon as it renews we will have another £7,000 to put towards his arthritis care to keep him happy and comfortable for another year

For now Boris is still comfortable on his painkillers and apart from now knowing about the fracture nothing has changed, his surgery is booked in to go ahead on the 12th September, unless we're lucky enough to again slip into a cancellation appointment sooner

We do have to be even more careful than we usually are about impact to Boris's elbows now that we know about the fracture, so no more sleeping on our bed or the sofa and definitely no stairs

I'm fully aware of the risk we're taking by waiting and that the fracture could potentially become a break if we're really unlucky

If it does break it'll be classed as an emergency and Boris will be operated on immediately regardless of his insurance status and we'll just have to figure something out

Originally Boris's scan wasn't booked until the end of July, so the timeline to surgery is what it always would have been, nothing has been held off before anybody comes at me

I'm just relieved that we now have the information about the fracture and we can take all the extra precautions needed on top of our usual ones to keep Boris comfortable and happy

It's starting to feel a bit like the universe has got it on for me at the moment, but I'm trying to keep positive, some good news must be around the corner and coming our way soon

  4. Hello. I just discovered your blog. Sorry to say it was because of some sad news about your pup Boris. Hope he feels better soon.

It's great to meet another cocker spaniel fan! I've had cocker spaniels for many years, and have been writing The Daily Bone since 2013 when Joey and Chester were in charge. Now it's up to our pups Rosie and Baby to keep up the reporting work. We would love it if you came to visit!
